Legalization Efforts
How long has it been since you dropped your Council Member a note? If it's been a few months since you've dropped your Council Member a note this would be a good time to drop them another. A brief friendly note is fine. Ferret stationary or note cards might make for a more memorable letter if you have them. Personal "non-ferret" stationary is fine too. Say hello to your Council Member, let them know you're aware that the City Council has had its hands full with all of the changes NYC has undergone in the past months and thank them for the work they're doing on your behalf and on the behalf of the people in your district. Remind them that legalizing ferrets in NYC is an important issue to you and that you hope, when the opportunity arises, they'll support any efforts to legalize ferrets in NYC. If you already know what a Council Member is and you know the name of the Council Member for your district, you can skip to the addresses. Otherwise, read on!
What is a Council Member and why should you write to them? The New York City Council is responsible for creating local laws for New York City. They have the power to make a new law to legalize ferrets in NYC. The City Council has 51 members. New York City's five boroughs are divided into 51 parts -like a grid. Each part is a "district." Each district has a Council Member assigned to it. So, whether or not you knew it, if you're a resident of NYC's five boroughs you live in a particular "district" of NYC and you have a Council Member that is specifically assigned to your district. BUT it gets better! Here's why it's so important for you to know who your Council Member is and why it's so important for them to hear from you. YOU can't vote on whether you want a new law to take place. YOU can't vote to make ferrets legal in NYC. But the Council Member who is assigned to your district can vote FOR you! It's their job to represent the people in their district at each vote and to vote the way that you and other people in their district tell them to! Before you go any further, take a moment to find out who your Council Member is. It takes less than 30 seconds. Ok. Did you write down your Council Member's name? Then let's continue!
