About NYCFerrets.Com

On June 29th 1999, ferrets were banned in New York City's five boroughs. Two days later on July 1st, 1999 the NYCFerrets.Com website opened (then known as "NYC Ferrets"). Our goal was, and still is, to provide a central source of accurate up to date information on the New York City ferret ban and current legalization efforts, so that NYC ferret supporters will have the information they need to take action and re-legalize ferrets in New York City's five boroughs.

We do our best to let you know what, when and where legalization efforts are taking place, and what you can do to support them. Whenever possible we will also provide you with any additional information or tools you need to help in those efforts.

In addition to providing information through our website, we also send out detailed updates through our mailing list and our email list. Due to funds and the manual labor involved, our regular mailing list updates are not sent out as frequently as our email updates. (Email updates cost us practically nothing!) If you are on our regular mailing list and have an email address as well, please let us know and consider joining our email list instead. You'll be kept up to date more frequently and with the money we save we'll be able to send our regular mailing to more people who do not have any access to the Internet.

NYCFerrets.Com also works with local pet stores that sell ferret supplies as well as NYC ferret veterinarians. Whenever there is an important announcement that ferret supporters need to be aware of, we supply as many of them as possible with flyers and handouts to give to their ferret customers so that they too will have the information they need. We encourage visitors to the website to do the same and usually have a copy of those same materials available for download.

NYCFerrets.Com is run by volunteers. We are regular people just like everybody else. Nobody at NYCFerrets.Com has any more "pull" or authority or power to change this ban than any of you. We can tell you what's going on, but YOU've got to do the actual work! Our strength is in numbers. When enough ferret supporters make their voices heard, respectfully, intelligently, to the right people and at the right times, ferrets will once again be legal pets in New York City.

Nothing will happen if you don't get involved. Reading about what's happening isn't enough. NYCFerrets.Com lets as many ferret supporters as possible know who to call and write, where to call and write, when to call and write, and when and where to show up for crucial events. All we need from you is to just do it!

*Update: Since there are no current legalization efforts in NYC at this time, NYCFerrets.Com is being maintained primarily as an archival site for information on the ban and past legalization efforts. If we are made aware of new ferret legalization efforts for NYC, this site will resume more of its former functions and will inform people on the e-mail lists.
